The Ranco della Chianina and Tonino Guerra

Walking through the streets or walking along the many paths that cross the upper Marecchia, Foglia and Metauro valleys, it is natural to come across the mammoth Chianina specimens. This bovine breed is recognizable by its white-porcelain mantle, pigmentation of the musk and tongue, light and elegant head with short horns.
Its trunk is long and cylindrical with a broad back and loins and with longer limbs than in other races. Its ancestor, known for over 2000 years by the Etruscans, cited by Pliny the Elder and other Latin authors such as "Bos magnus et albus", came from the Romans in the triumphal parades and used, for its grandeur, for the sacrifices divinity. Today this breed together with Podolica, Maremmana, Marchigiana and Romagnola is protected by the IGP 5R. Precisely in the Apennine pastures for the quality of the uncontaminated environment of the territory of Badia Tedalda, it finds a point of maximum excellence, highly sought after also for its limited production.
For over twenty years, every year, taking up the tradition of the ancient cattle fair of the Ranco (late September on the occasion of St. Michael the Archangel patron of Badia Tedalda), in Ponte Presale, at "Service Center and Selection Manze", performs the National Exhibition of Chianini breeding. An old tradition is that of the fair of the Ranco di Badia Tedalda of which there are written documentation from 1593 although it can be assumed that this fair is even more ancient for the position of road junction and trade that has had since Roman times. In 1989, the Ranco found a space in the work of Maestro Tonino Guerra in the poem "The Garden of Elisha / L'Ort ad Liséo" published by Maggioli.
