Monastery of Santa Maria del Fonte

The Monastery of Santa Maria del Fonte belongs to the Benedictine order. Among the five monastic settlements of the Middle Ages fossatano is the only one to have survived as such.
The act of foundation, of 1292, says that it is to build iuxta castrum (near the castle, not inside, to underline also in this the detachment from the world). Between the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century the Monastery of Santa Caterina was built, built in 1314 near the Colle di Fossato and in the place that, after its total disappearance, still preserves its place name.
