Rocca Hordelaffa

The construction of a first fort dates back to the mid-fourteenth century. The structure was built between 1361 and 1363 by the will of the cardinal Egidio Carrilla de Albornoz. In 1379 Sinibaldo Ordelaffi, who became lord of Forlimpopoli, made the first transformation of the fortress into a real fortress. Between 1471 and 1480, Pino III Ordelaffi launched a subsequent intervention that gave the structure its size and its current appearance, an operation completed under the dominions of Gerolamo Riario and Caterina Sforza. The fortification is characterized by four massive corner towers with a circular section, a wall reinforced by a masonry with a shoe and the presence of a wide moat on four sides (of which today are preserved only the eastern and southern sections). Subsequently the fortress passes under the dominion of Cesare Borgia, Rangoni and Zampeschi. Under the lordship of the Zampeschi, the complex lives the moment of its maximum splendor. Currently the municipal offices are located in the northern wing; in the eastern wing, on the first floor, there is the large double-volume hall reserved for the City Council: here the oldest stone coat of arms of the city of Forlimpopoli, dating back to the mid-seventeenth century, has been transferred. La Rocca is also home to the MAF - Forlimpopoli "Tobia Aldini" Archaeological Museum, "G. Greens".
