Church of Sant’Agostino

The origins of the church seem to be linked to the passage from Anghiari by Thomas Becket (1115-1170), Chancellor of Henry II of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. He obtained in 1164 from Rolando di Montedoglio, Abbot of San Bartolomeo, the charcoal burners of the Castle that were outside the walls, where the Spedalieri di S. Antonio Abate, his companions, built cells and an oratory dedicated to S. Antonio. In the thirteenth century the community passed to the rule of St. Augustine and shortly thereafter, above the oratory, a church dedicated to the saint was built. Following the collapse of the bell tower, the building was enlarged in 1464 in the aftermath of the Florentine conquest, when all the surrounding neighborhood was also the subject of a large building intervention that defined the urban characteristics maintained until today. The church has recently been restored.
