Scheggia e Pascelupo

Two communities aggregated in a succession of wavy hills immersed in the summits of Monte Catria and Monte Cucco. A landscape of secret gorges and pure water, sacred woods and paths, of clear, healthy air makes it a territory full of history and traditions that have remained unchanged over the centuries.

The municipal territory of Scheggia and Pascelupo is immersed in the regional park of Monte Cucco, in the border area between Umbria and the Marche regions. The union of the two small and delightful villages, intended to optimise resources and structures, that dates back to the end of 1800. The two villages first followed different paths. On the one hand, the wooded areas of Scheggia, along the Via Flaminia, a land of incursions by the Goths, Lombards and Byzantines, and the other village a fortified outpost of Pascelupo lying on the hill. Both centres were inhabited throughout the medieval period and were defensive bulwarks for Gubbio, before joining the Urbino Duchy and then the State of the Church after the death of Cardinal Della Rovere. Of those epochs and battles for the possession of the territory the castle of Luceoli is preserved built on an ancient Roman settlement and with a circular wall.

Abbeys and monasteries lost in the silence of the valley tell of a religious tradition full of mysticism and authenticity. Religious itineraries connect the  Benedictine and Camaldolese abbeys with hermitages excavated in limestone rock. One route goes from the abbey of Saints Emiliano and Bartolomeo in Congiuntoli (XII century) to the abbey of Santa Maria di Sitria, founded near Isola Fossara at the beginning of the XI century by San Romualdo, touching the hermitage of San Girolamo, on the steep slopes of the Rio Freddo river. An invitation to silence and meditation.

From the abbeys to good food, from the ancient rituals of children far away from the cultural and recreational traditions, Scheggia and Pascelupo is an area that is always sparkling and has enjoyed a certain cultural liveliness also for its position of being on an important road junction along the Via Flaminia.

Today archaic rituals survive, divided into two parts between May and June, centred on the characteristic uphill walk to the top of Monte Catria, and the Race of the “Bighe", between the two districts of the village and the square, held during the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which combines gastronomy, religious events, games and pyrotechnics. Last but not least, the Spring Festival with which the citizens welcome the summer season with a typical countryside lunch, hiking in the woods and a walk with a visit to the hermitage of Monte Cucco.
