Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Dedicated to the cult of Santa Caterina D'Alessandria Christian martyr, is called bastard because the brotherhood of Santa Caterina del Gonfalone to which it referred managed the hospital of the exhibits, which allowed young people raised in this condition to learn a trade and to have a dowry, for marriage. The church has its main entrance in via Maremma, which is noted for its beautiful portal in pietra serena in Gothic style, with engraved JHS and a date difficult to decipher due to the abrasion of time. In Piazza Umberto I, on the other hand, there is another entrance realized in pietra serena that bears the inscription of SANCTA CATTARINA. The church has a single nave with a barrel ceiling where a skylight opens and illuminates the presbytery. Inside you can see the main altar dedicated to the Saint carved by Gian Giacomo Zuccari uncle of the most famous Taddeo and Federico, and two side altars. The uniqueness of the small church is in the side walls completely decorated with stuccoes both of a decorative nature and depicting the Cardinal virtues that the Fathers of the church probably made by Tommaso Ammantini of Casteldurante, a student of the Brandani.
