Magistero - Faculty of Education Sciences and Sociology

"In the wake of the work carried out at the Faculty of Law, De Carlo continues this activity of recovery of the city center carried out by the University and supported by the city administration, in the profound intervention that gave life to the former Faculty of Magisterium between the 1968 and 1976. His conception of architectural space perfectly matched the politics of the two city institutions, so much so that in the complex of the Magisterium the idea of interconnection between the history of the city, its urban fabric and the life of the inhabitants gave life In this regard, if the exterior is faithfully taken back into what are the original modules of the complex so as not to distort the now consolidated urban balances of that part of the historic center, the internal project re-proposes the old building in a disruptive way In fact, as the surface of the old convent is too small, De Carlo conceives a structure ch and it must be developed vertically, digging up to a depth of sixteen meters, so as to allow the building to develop below ground level without this being felt outside of the Faculty. The strong discrepancy between the outside and the inside becomes even more evident as soon as you enter the main entrance of via Saffi, which does not open on the first level, but on the middle level; or from the entrance of via San Gerolamo, on the fifth and last floor, but for those who enter it appears as the first. All this interlocking game of the various internal spaces solves its own balance through the development on the cylindrical court, in which the two lime trees center suggest the vertical sense of the building and on which the professors' studies overlook; and the Aula Magna of the lowest level that, by moving the sound-absorbing panels of the upper floor classrooms, can accommodate up to 1500 people. In the area facing the church of San Bernardino, designed by its "ideal teacher" Francesco di Giorgio Martini and almost as a tribute to the great Sienese architect, the project shows the inventiveness of the architect, making the light play with the mirrors of the suspended hall and the others surrounding it; all surrounded by discovering at each level hanging gardens that culminate in the roof that brings the memory to the previous example of Le Corbousier. This wide open space towards the horizon makes the building a sort of discrete vantage point, as seem to suggest the large windows in the shape of a keyhole that turn to the mountains of Montefeltro, or the porthole of the study room that has correspondence with the door openings of the classrooms.
