Hermitage of Santo Marzio

Primary tabs

Hermitage of Santo Marzio

The Hermitage of Santo Marzio was built around 1219, in the homonymous mountain valley, by the first Franciscans Gualdesi. The place, made famous by the presence of St. Francis around 1224, ended in ruins at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It was resurrected in the early 40s of the last century, thanks to Salvatore Salerno, who rebuilt it on the foundations of the ancient ruins de-covered by mountain debris. In the Middle Ages it was a welcoming place of penance, sanctified by the presence of hermits, among them the eponymous saint. The Hermitage has recently been restored. Adjacent to the small church there is a square equipped so as to make it a quiet refreshment point, inviting for small groups and family groups.
