Church of San Sergio

From the documents of the chapter archive, San Sergio is among the oldest churches in the city and first bishop's seat until 1021, but of its origin, probably after the Byzantine conquest there is no trace left in the name of the patron saint, who was the patron of Justinian's troops.
Since it was then built on that site, outside the walls, and only later transposed on the Poggio, it probably depends on the fact that originally the urban center corresponded to the same pagan city, still alive in the monumental testimonies then gradually vanished in centuries of decadence and spoliation. No trace remained, even of subsequent events; nothing that can give an idea of the ancient increase.
In the second half of the fifteenth century, St. Sergius was enlarged and enriched by the bishop Andrea Paltroni, and from 1460 he enjoyed the title of a priory, in memory of the ancient dignity.
The interior, a completely anonymous hall, oppressed by a very low ceiling, where the structure was suggested by a recently erected nineteenth-century decoration, looks today more than ever bewildering due to the remains of a Roman cistern.
