Church of Capuchins

The Capuchin church, together with the adjoining convent, is an architectural complex dating back to the 16th century. The sacred building contains within it a painting by Angelo Angeloni of Pennabilli depicting the Immaculate Madonna; a popular voice tells that the Virgin in 1796 and in the following year she moved her eyes and the miracle would be repeated in 1850. In a side altar, another fine canvas shows Mary waiting to receive in her arms the Child close to the chest from San Felice: the work is attributed to a follower of Guercino (seventeenth century). In the sacristy is preserved a beautiful pottery of Urbino of the century. XVI that seems to capture a family scene.
The whole stands on the hill known as the "Cappuccini", from the order of the friars who held there convent until the suppression of religious orders, followed by the unification of Italy. In 1869 the complex was sold by the State to the Municipality of Urbino.
Today the building and the land belong to the University of Studies, which has built colleges for students on the western slope of the hill.
The hill, which offers a fascinating view of the city and the surrounding mountains, was made famous by the poem "L'aquilone" by Giovanni Pascoli, in which the author recalls the years he spent in Urbino.
