Badia Tedalda, the story of a borderland

From the historical, artistic and architectural point of view, the territory of Badia Tedalda, which includes numerous hamlets, is affected by the presence of remains and testimonies of various eras. The hill of "Galli", on which today stands the abbey church of St. Michael the Archangel, brings us back to the Italic peoples, that saw invasions, withdrawals and advances typical of border or transit positions of Etruscan, Umbrian, Roman populations , Gauls followed by Byzantines and Lombards. Later the populations of the middle and upper Valmarecchia, of the Montefeltro and of the Foglia adopted it as way of communication for the commercial activities the street Ariminensis. From a simple "itinerant mansio" of the Roman period, Badia Tedalda became, with time, a point of support for all the pilgrims / travelers who crossed the Via di Viamaggio pass to Assisi and Rome. During the late Middle Ages the Benedictine monastery of San Michele Arcangelo was established, whose monks have - as their main occupation - the care and exploitation of the great forests of Viamaggio and Alpe della Luna. For several centuries - the fate of the local community is closely intertwined with those of the monastery. Since the 13th century the Benedictine Abbey of the Tedaldi, after the reunification with that of Arduino, acquired such power, to be built as a fief and dominated for over two centuries the Valmarecchia and the Alta Valle del Metauro and the Alpe forests of the moon . During the dominance the dominant figure was the Abbot Tedalgrado. A period of decadence followed until Pope Leo X (1489) offered it to the Hospital of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, returning to its former splendor. Thanks also to the work of Abbot Leonorado Buonafede, who had the abbey rebuilt on a structure dating back to the eleventh century in Romanesque style, with a bell tower set on a pre-existing defensive tower and enriching the interior with works by the Robbiana school. In 1607 the Medici bought from the Gonzaga of Novellara the last "islands" that enjoyed a "status" of administrative autonomy as S. Sofia -Cicognaia and Ca 'Raffaello that became in fact annexed to the Abbey. Then, in July 1775, Badia Tedalda was established as a community, at the behest of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold I. On March 15, 1860, the Plebiscite of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany ratifies the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy. During the years 1944/1945 the territory of Badia Tedalda, crossed by the Gothic Line of the Nazi retreat, was a war scenario with great resistance and partisan actions.
