Hermitage of Montecasale

According to the first available sources, the convent was built in 1192 by the Camaldolese to give hospitality to the pilgrims who from the Alpe della Luna went to the Marche side. Starting from 1213 it was given to Saint Francis and from that moment it became one of the main points of reference for Franciscan spirituality. The area in fact is located right along the path that Francesco traveled to go to the Verna. According to tradition, it is also a place where numerous miraculous events were carried out by Saint Francis. Today it is inhabited by Capuchin friars and a destination for tourists and pilgrims. The Sasso Spicco, still present, is a huge boulder where Francis, according to the testimonies, went to pray. The fact that it is totally surrounded by greenery and surrounded by woods, makes the hermitage of Montecasale something unique and beautiful from a purely naturalistic point of view, as well as its strong and widespread sense of spirituality.
