Medieval village
The ancient Castle of Serra Sant'Abbondio (Castrum Serre Sancti Habundi) was most probably restored and fortified around 1225 AD, during the Eugubina domination. Part of the original stone enclosure still surrounds the village and opens into two doors both built of limestone: the Porta di Macione, located on the south side of the ancient castle walls and the Porta Santa, main entrance door, which plays also the function of clock tower. Walking through the village it is easy to stumble upon the dead man's doors and in the furrows. The doors of the dead are narrow doors located on the façade of some houses of medieval origin. According to tradition, the door of the dead was opened to be then only restored on the occasion of the exit of the coffin with the dead. The furrows were open sewers with the function of transporting grey water to the nearest riverbed. Built on a slight slope, they run between the walls of the houses and on them are overlooked the windows from which they used to throw the grey water.
