Belforte all’Isauro

The door of Montefeltro which was once defended the Massa Trabaria, on the border between the Marche and Tuscany, it stands lonely and imposing on a rocky spur. Below the rivers Isauro and Fossato flow.

Protected by the entire valley, Belforte all'Isauro is a hospitable land full of honey and truffles. Its history is woven around the stones of its ancient castle: of lombard origins, the fortress has undergone remodelling over the centuries and has taken its final shape thanks to the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who gave it the typical stamp of the Duchy's castles.

During the long war between the Malatesta and Montefeltro families, the castle was used as an outpost for the concentration of ducal troops. By curious mistake it was purchased in 1874 by the Prussian baron of Beaufort, Hermann De Tenneret, who believed that it had belonged to his ancestors in the past. The structure was immediately donated to the municipality and destined "for school use and for the benefit of the municipality". Today, after being renovated, the castle is used as a primary school and since 1994 it is home to the Italian institute for foreigners.

A land of passage of ancient populations, before the formation of the present town, that in the Middle Ages was inhabited by a nomadic populace dedicated to sheep farming. The three ancient Roman farms testify to the conquest, while a document in the church of St. Lawrence has been found, dating back to Roman times, currently preserved in the archaeological museum of Urbino.

The medieval structure of the castle and its characteristic bridge contrasts with the Renaissance profile of the village and the magnificent houses widening around it. As in a mosaic, marked by the stratification of different peoples and domination, stands the ancient church of St. Lawrence of Carolingian age, built at the bottom of the valley to welcome travellers, the parish church of St. Lawrence, in which are preserved a canvas of the baroque school ("San Francesco stimmatizzato") and a crucifix that is considered miraculous, and finally the public garden with the modern fountain by the Sculptor Franco Assetto.

Belforte all'Isauro is known for the truffles that grow in its territory and are sold in local shops, in the famous fairs of the Province and even abroad. Also appreciated are the truffle products such as salamis, creams and seasonings. The arboreal and spontaneous blooms give a small and precious honey production that allowed the village to be inserted into the circuit of the Honey Cities. Among the recurring appointments, we find "The Honey and Autumn Festival in Belforte all'Isauro".
