Frontone

Nestled between the slopes of the Apennine ridge, at the point where the thunderstorms and the clouds rumble we find Frontone. The village extends into the shadow of the imposing massif, immortalised in the lines of the Divine Comedy for hosting in the hermitage of Fonte Avellana where San Pier Damiani is encountered by Dante in the 21st canto of “Paradiso”.

On the border between Marche and Umbria, along the eastern slope of Monte Catria, which is 1701 meters high, and that is called "the Switzerland of the Marche" for its position and the healthy and mild climate throughout the year.

Land of passage of ancient peoples (Umbri, Piceni, Gauls, Romans, Lombards and Franks), contended by princes and warriors, land of the Montefeltro family. The oldest document dates back to 1072 as does the castle that was the last bastion of Montefeltro between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, considered one of the greatest examples of military architecture of the 11th century.

The chronicles tell of a long and fierce siege by Sigismondo Malatesta of Rimini in 1445 and the decision by Duke Federico to strengthen its defensive system by relying on foreign engineers and the abilities of the ingenious Francesco di Giorgio Martini.

Today, the town hall and the town centre of Frontone have been moved from the castle to the township adjacent to the railway station.  From the top of the fortress, in a panoramic position, one can see the Adriatic sea which imposes upon the superb and uncontaminated nature that reaches to top of Monte Nerone.

The people of Frontone, have always made their livelihood from the mountain, without altering the balance of nature. The result is a frugal cuisine, made up of cereal soups and hot dishes prepared with precious products from the forests.

In restaurants and trattorias one can find traditional recipes, such as “crescia" with prosciutto (ham) or pasta with porcini mushrooms.

In winter when the landscape becomes white with snow, one can take the cable car and reach the snow covered fields of Acuto. In spring and summer, however, there is a healthy and mild climate. Fresh valleys and green hills that are ideal for walks and hikes

Along the nature trails, there are valuable cultural elements, such as, in the nearby Sant'Abbondio, church and the hermitage of Fonte Avellana.

In the third week of May, there is the “Sapori e Profumi di Primevera” festival, from which Frontone inaugurates a season of cultural delights, food and sports events that end in December with the characteristic Christmas markets.
