Verucchio

“Cradle of the Malatesta family", a place full of history and colours. Those of the ancient buildings of the millenary village, the green that embraces it and the colour of the sea. Far away, but recognisable at a first glance. Looking inland from the coast one’s eye will be attracted to the imposing Malatesta fortress, a symbol of the power of the Lordship that is still intact today.

Verucchio begins at this point, in the XII century, the fascinating history of the Malatesta family.  Today, this town where the blue of the Adriatic blends into the slender architecture, preserves the presence of the dynasty that dominated the territory for over two centuries. The noble family of the "Mastin vecchio" chose Verucchio as the bastion of his power: a hill not too far from the sea, a strategic outpost to control the plains and the valley of the river Marecchia.

The Malatesta's presence has left a strong and characteristic impression on the village, beginning with the medieval system that is recognised by walking through the streets of the historic centre. The heart of the urban development that characterised the Malatesta era, today is recognised in the harmonious coexistence of civil buildings and religious architectures, symbols of a prosperity that remained even after with the end of the noble dynasty, and continued over the following centuries. The beauty inherited from its medieval history has allowed Verucchio to build its own tourist identity and a cultural vocation over time.

But not only the Malatesta family gave charm to these places.  A visit to the Archaeological Civic Museum inside the Monastery of “Padri Agostiniani” (Agostinian Fathers) confirms that many other stories are hidden in the city walls. Many of them have come to light thanks to the numerous archaeological excavations that uncovered necropoli and settlements dating back to even earlier than Etruscan times. Weapons, precious objects, jewels of gold and amber are just some of the remains of a grandiose civilisation “Villanovian”, which inhabited the territory of Verucchio between the IX and VII centuries BC.

History, culture, archeology. But also natural beauties. The landscape around Verucchio asks lovers of nature to explore it and live it.  Along the stretch of the Marecchia River, which flows next to the city, the landscape gives emotions and surprises, such as the discovery of a real canyon populated by mysterious caves as well as the flora and fauna of the “Cà Brigida” WWF Oasis. Itineraries to follow on foot or bike admiring the fortress and the sea
