Santarcangelo di Romagna

The heart of Romagna. The ancient citadel, the Via Emilia, the caves dug into the clay. And again: the hills of the Sangiovese grapes, the piadina, the artisan shops, the scents of the valley, the verses of a poet. Santarcangelo di Romagna, a generous and hospitable land, welcomes visitors with all the warmth of the typical Romagna hospitality. It is a unique heritage of history, culture, nature, and emotions.

The medieval village lies in the hilly part of the territory around the imposing “Malatesta” fortress. The route, which leads through various districts, streets and ancient businesses, is now fully accessible.

Under the ancient town, there is another city to explore. A labyrinth of caves, tunnels, wells, galleries and circular rooms, profound and immense just like the desire for protection during long sieges by the barbarians. This underground world, excavated in Colle Giove (Jupiter’s Hill), served to protect the inhabitants from external attacks, and to preserve food and wine.

Local cuisine, today, is a patrimony to be protected and valued: not by chance, it is in a land of good food, celebrated in the markets, in the local restaurants and in the many gastronomies where pasta is still a based on flour, water, salt and a rolling pin. To accompany the meal, there is the sincerity of Sangiovese, a great Italian wine "baptised" in this land (and from the Colle Giove (Jupiter Hill) on which the town stands, which gave the wine its name).

Genuine like the flavours of this land, the nature of the area can be admired in its changing colours, along a thousand paths: from the slopes of the Colle Giove to the paths along the river Marecchia, ideal for lovers of walking, cycling and mountain biking.

From the breath of the Apennines to the voice of man. There is a magical thread that combines the splendour of the territory with the beauty of its minds. Like the poets Raffaello Baldini and Tonino Guerra, to whom Sant'Arcangelo di Romagna gave birth, conquering the title of the capital of poetry in Romagna dialect. “Stop and listen to what water has to say to you" is the message of Tonino Guerra to his city, he created an exclusive series of fountains, to be admired at various points in the town.

The artistic presence acquires a cosmopolitan dimension during the International Festival of Theatre, a manifestation that takes place in July, attracting artists from the scene of European  contemporary theatre.
