Sant'Agata Feltria
As if it were a fairy tale. The magic of the medieval village is breathtaking in the quiet of the alleys, in the intimate atmosphere of the courts, in the beauty of the buildings, in the warmth of the stone, in the enchanting palaces, in the harmony of the churches. But the true heart of this fairy tale corner of the Apennine is the Rocca Fregoso fort, the indisputable symbol of Sant'Agata Feltria.
The fort stands proudly on the cliff of Sasso del Lupo, a sandstone massif, detached - according to legend - from a ridge of Monte Ercole, that lies above the present town. Built in the 10th century as a fortified outpost, from the fifteenth century the castle underwent numerous architectural interventions to become a noble residence. Originally entrusted to the Malatesta family, and then to the Montefeltro family, in the sixteenth century it passed to the Fregoso family, whose name is still preserved. Since then, the complex was embellished with works of art, coffered ceilings, fireplaces and sixteenth-century frescoes. Beneath the fortress there is also an ancient nativity scene. The medieval and the renaissance souls live in perfect harmony: this is perhaps the greatest magic of the Rocca Fregoso fort, which since 2014 has become "The Fortress of Fairy Tales", a permanent children's museum where anything is possible.
The fortified town of Petrella Guidi is also of great charm, which maintains its own medieval fortification. A dreamy atmosphere can be experienced in the Mariani Theatre in Sant'Agata Feltria, a scenic jewel of the nineteenth century, chosen by Vittorio Gassman for the television debut of his Divine Comedy.
In the village, there are numerous ecclesiastical buildings: the Collegiate of Sant'Agata with the characteristic bell tower, to the church and convent of St. Jerome, the Capuchins and the Clarisse, as well as the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso, with its Romanesque interior.
Among the places of myth, culture and faith, the town also houses some of Tonino Guerra's “Luoghi dell’anima” (places of the soul). The subtle genius of the roman poet reflects on life starting from water: there are precious fountains that - located in various parts of the country - symbolise slowness, constancy, memory and energy.
The territory has a prestigious cuisine, white truffles, of which Sant'Agata Feltria can be considered the chosen kingdom, it stands out for both quality and quantity. These products of excellence, along with cheeses of other local products can be discovered each year during the renowned National Fair, which takes place in October
