Poggio Torriana

To possibility to relive a legendary story. Poggio Torriana is the site of Montebello and its castle, inhabited - according to the medieval myth - by the ghost of Azzurrina, the albino daughter of Lord Uguccione . The little girl, who spent her brief existence locked in the fortress, disappeared during a heavy storm on the summer solstice of 1375: since then, according to legend, Azzurrina's ghost returns to haunt every year on the longest day of the year.

A land of mysteries, legends and goose bumps, Poggio Torriana is also a land of beauty and mystical peace. It is easy to abandon oneself in astonishment of the panorama, observable from the Rocca di Torriana fortress, and the nearby church of Santi Filippo and Giacomo, situated on the highest point of the mountain. These privileged observation points over the valley, the Malatesta fortress and the Church dominate a breathtaking landscape stretching from the Tuscan & Romagna Apennines all the way to the Adriatic coast. An invitation to contemplation and silence can be found in the Madonna di Saiano Hermitage and Sanctuary, built on a rocky spur. Inside, the sanctuary houses a statue of the Madonna, dating back to the sixteenth century. Outside, the Apennine landscape stands out in all its pride. To protect the surrounding nature, rich in biodiversity, the Montebello Wildlife Protection Oasis was born, which is also home to the Valmarecchia Nature Observatory.

In the ancient heart of the hamlet of Poggio Berni, medieval and renaissance atmospheres are still alive: Palazzo Marcosanti, an ancient medieval castle fortified by the Malatesta family, was the scene of family events of many noble houses, such as the Della Rovere family, the Doria family, the Montefeltro family, the Gonzaga family the Medici family and the Albani family.  Palazzo Tosi, an ancient fortified complex, recounts - in today's structure - the various reconstructions carried out throughout the ages and centuries; Palazzo Borghesi has precious 19th century frescoes, and Palazzo Astolfi, has an exterior that dates back to the 18th century (the façade, park and courtyard with well) and ceilings that are beautifully frescoed.

Framing the life of these places, from their beginnings, is the River Marecchia, which runs along the valley.  Along its banks, not far from the village of Poggio Torriana, one can admire three water mills, invaluable pieces of history and local culture
