Peglio

A green terrace in Montefeltro. An ancient hamlet, a passage of driveways rich in vegetation, lies in the beautiful valley of the River Metauro. With groups of medieval houses tastefully built. Past elements that blend in one breath with the new realities of an innovative economy that pivots around energy saving.

Peglio's observation tower in the Middle Ages was used as a bulwark to see its enemies and to hide behind its mighty stones. Destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War and then patiently rebuilt it is today a lighthouse. The green philosophy that has radiated through the valley and has promoted activities aimed at energy self-sufficiency, the production of energy from renewable sources and the preservation of water.

Along the streets of the village we find the fountains of piazza Petrangolini and Ca 'Durante, the old washing basin, the underground cistern in the square Giovanni XIII and the small natural spring at Ca' Batazzi that form a path called "the waterways" this route shows the visitor where the historic water points are.

The tracks excavated in the rock tell of folklore rites and ancient beliefs surviving the rationalism of modernity.  The path called "In the footsteps of the devil"  always fascinates old and young people. Today, the ancient settlement of Roman origin, called Castrum Pilei, Peglio retains the characteristic quadrangular tower (Torre del Girone, with a bell from the XVI century), which imposes on the intricate lattice of narrow streets that make up the underlying medieval village.

There are signs of Lombard domination - history recounts that upon the death of Pipino il Breve in 768, Massa Trabaria, including the town of Peglio, was donated to the patrimony of St. Peter who is kept in the crypts of the church of San Fortunato, one of the more ancient churches that was reconstructed in Baroque style. Inside there is also a "Via Crucis", probably produced in the ceramic workshops of nearby Casteldurante.

Peglio also boasts a university of the arts that, that through the didactics and thematic itineraries, applies the rules of reusing and creative recycling. The contamination between ancient and modern is the dominant theme along the path embracing the old part of Peglio with the works of local contemporary artists combined together with other  elements of the urban context.

In the summer, in the cool moonlit nights, the village is enchanted by spells and magic during the "De gustibus" event: the fiery dazzling dancers return to the streets, the wandering street artists  and dancers move on in cheerful rhythms of songs.
