Tower of the Palazzo Comunale

In the Middle Ages, the castle's tower was built to defend the village, which allowed the defence of the wall as desired by the Statutes, and its annexed domus. To increase the defensive armament, each outgoing Vicar, after the six months of office, left the castle two gold florins. On the top the emblem of a griffon, the Perugian sign of domination and protection. The brick crenellation appears next to the 14th century, while the last sturdy door, of which a door is preserved, dates back to 1536. The gothic entrance arch, under which the hinges are still visible. This door, of which the key is still working, is guarded like the other doors of Fossato, from custodes to portas day and night, from the sixteenth century there was the submission to the Papal State in 1540, followed by aggressions, betrayals, pestilences and discomforts of all kinds, as already other times. The custodes also prevented the entry of people from outside the walls of the castrum, if they were lacking the license of the mayor; it was the only access door, finally, on this west face of the walled settlement and for its particular importance is a depiction of Fossato in 1817, by two doors that controlled access to the square in front of the crenellated tower and which connected the two towers that today are the two civil structures in front of the crenellated tower itself.
