Society of Crossbowmen and Flag-waving Group
Those of the crossbowmen and flag-wavers are associations that have long characterized and shaped the tradition of the city with their own forms. The Society of Crossbowmen is an ancient association that is concerned with annually perpetuating the "singolar tenzone" disputed from the fifteenth century against Gubbio on the occasion of the Palio della Balestra, in which the crossbowmen of the two cities compete for the title of winners in the shooting competition crossbow. The flag-waving group is made up of flag-wavers, tambourines and clarinets, and also recalls the fifteenth century, when in Europe, affected by numerous conflicts, the flags were enriched with blades and were also used for war purposes. Today even the flag-wavers take part in the event of the Palio della Balestra, when they cheer up the city showing the typical Flag Games and showing off the techniques developed during the last centuries in which the performances have assumed the value of play and show.
