Sanctuary of the Madonna del Lago

It was built in a place at that time swampy (for this "lake") where, according to legend, was found a miraculous image of the Virgin escaped the iconoclastic destruction of Constantinople.

The icon, depicting the Mother of God of Tenderness and preserved in the past in the Cathedral of Santa Caterina, is still today one of the most cherished relics to the religious memory of the Bertinesi. The new apse was built in 1702 and in 1714 it was decorated by the plasterer Antonio Martinetti, with scenes dedicated to the Eternal Father in glory among the angels, the Assumption of Mary to heaven and the statues of Saint Anselm of Aosta, Saint Ildefonso and St. Pier Damiani. These are the fathers and doctors of the Church who provided the main contributions to the development of Marian theology. The external façade was completed by Giulio Zambianchi in 1878.
