Raffaello' birthplace

Raffaello' birthplace

Raffaello's birthplace was built in the 14th century. Raffaello's father, Giovanni Santi (1435 - 1494), bought it in 1460.
John Santi himself was a humanist, poet and painter at Federico da Montefeltro's court, and right there the young Raffaello (1483-1520) learned the first notions of painting.
Since then, the house was purchased in 1635 by Muzio Oddi, an archbishopric architect, and then became a property in 1873 of the Raffaello Academy, founded in 1869 by Pompeo Gherardi, who has since promoted all sorts of studies and initiatives dedicated to the painter.

On the first floor there is a large room with a chest of drawers where Giovanni Santi's work is preserved "Annunciazione", together with reproductions of "Madonna della Seggiola" and "Vision of Ezechiele". Of particular beauty is the "Madonna and Child", located in the room where the painter was born, attributed by the critic now to Giovanni Santi, now to the young Raffello. You can also find a drawing attributed to Bramante (1444 - 1514) and a collection of ceramics from the Renaissance era. On the upper floor, the Academy's headquarters, you can also admire manuscripts, rare editions, coins, portraits dating from the nineteenth century.
