Palazzo Pretorio

Palazzo Pretorio

The construction of the building, located at the center of the first nucleus of Anghiari, was begun by the Perugians in 1339 and presents an "L" planimetric organization. On the façade we can trace the evidence of its primitive structure as the round-arched windows, despite the transformations that took place over the centuries. Also visible are many coats of arms in terracotta and stone, belonging to the Podestà and to the Vicars of Anghiari, and a large fresco, unfortunately rather damaged, placed inside a niche. The Palace was the seat of the Florentine Vicariate and of the court since 1386, after Arezzo and its countryside passed under the dominion of Florence. Starting from the nineteenth century it became a municipal seat. The ground floor once housed the prisons, which can still be visited today. On the left side there is a fresco of a fair size that represents Justice. On the right side is the Chapel of the Old Court, recently restored, decorated with fifteenth-century frescoes. The Council Hall, at the top of the stairs, houses works donated to the town by fellow painter Fausto Vagnetti (1876-1954), including a painting depicting the Magdalene in adoration.
