La Giudecca district
The settlement of a Jewish community in Bertinoro dates back to the end of the 14th century.
In a contract of 1419 we talk about a house owned by a Jew Leone placed between the current Via Mainardi and via Fossato. The general system of the building, datable to the half of the century. XV and placed in the center of Giudecca, is made of bricks and stone blocks. On the front the areas destined to house the families are still legible. On the eastern side, on the corner between Via Fossato and Via Mainardi, terracotta tiles are visible that reproduce the motifs of the cornucopia and the lamp of Ner Tamid. It is presumable that on this side of the building the synagogue of the Jewish community had been built.
In the middle of the century XV was born Ovadyah Yare, one of the major commentators of the Mishnah, still recognized today as the Great Bertinoro.
