Ganganelli Arc

When in 1769 Cardinal Lorenzo Ganganelli was elected pope, local authorities thought they had to celebrate the event. The Roman Curia, by Cardinal Legato, his representative, made it clear to the Sant'Arcangelo citizens that the occasion deserved a significant achievement. It was thought to commission the famous architect Cosimo Morelli, the "official" architect of the Holy See, who proposed the construction of a triumphal arch beside the Ganganelli square on the track of the then Emilia Street. The works ended in 1777.
