Ex Pieve San Giovanni Battista

Ex Pieve San Giovanni Battista

Around the church of San Giovanni Battista (of Romanesque origin) probably the first settlement of Fermignano was built. The building, probably of small dimensions, had a single nave; the presbytery area had to be slightly raised and bordered by a simple balustrade constituted by cylindrical pillars of local stone. In stone it was the same baptismal font, closed by two doors in fir wood. Externally the church had two entrances: the main Gothic, with "diamond-tipped" capitals, and one, of service, perhaps opposed to this one. The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista lost its importance during the eighteenth century, especially after the earthquake of 1781 which damaged its structure. The building materials were reused for the restoration of the new parish church of Santa Veneranda, already existing since the mid-sixteenth century, in which the baptismal font was transferred. The Pieve was definitively deconsecrated in 1821.
