Church of Santo Stefano

Coming down from Anghiari along the fourteenth-century road you arrive at the small church of Santo Stefano, located at the beginning of the vast plain that reaches as far as Sansepolcro. The architectural structure of the building has been heavily altered over the centuries and brought to light with a restoration carried out around 1970. It is a small temple in bricks with a high-medieval structure (VII-VIII century) with evident Byzantine-Ravenna influences . It has a central square plan enclosed by three semicircular chapels. Outside the main room is decorated with three blind arches on each side, from which the chapels protrude like apses: probably these alluded to the Catholic symbol of the Trinity in a territory that was disputed with the Lombards of Arian faith. Inside, the central room is joined to the chapels with round arches on Roman bare columns, with an Ionic capital. Valuable is the fifteenth-century table with the Madonna with Child and Saints by the Florentine painter Domenico di Michelino.
