Castle of Pianettole

Primary tabs

Castle of Pianettole

Pianettole is a fine example of a medieval fortress kept in a good state of preservation, where the high stone walls are evident, the arched door that is the only access inside the walls and the mighty tower with base. The tower is still divided by wooden floors connected by stairs, while on the first floor there is a fireplace. Built by the lords of Montauto, the castle was donated to the Camaldolese in 1142. In 1502 Sansepolcro saw the territories of Anghiari and Pieve Santo Stefano subjected. Immediately its citizens took advantage to demolish the castle of Anghiari: on the same occasion the Castle of Pianettole was also destroyed.
