The Alpe Luna, from the Catria to the Casentinesi Forests a spectacular nature trail

The Alpe della Luna Nature Reserve, of which Badia Tedalda is the chief town, is characterized by wide ridges covered with woods, valleys crossed by torrents, sandstone walls, narrow gorges, waterfalls. A treasure chest of natural resources preserved in an intact and wild environment, crossed only by forest roads and paths. The first thing that strikes the eye of the visitor is the dense and spectacular vegetation, composed mainly of beech trees, oaks, hornbeams, maples, lindens, alders, rowan trees, holly.
The Apennine chain, which stands at 1,000 m.s.l.m. which starts from Monte Loggio (1186), sees in Monte dei Frati (1,453 m) its main peak and runs between the Tuscany Region, Emilia Romagna, Marche and Umbria.
A true paradise for lovers of hiking, trekking and nature that fits in a context of great artistic and cultural interest.
Starting from the north, a short distance from Badia Tedalda we find the Natural Park of Sasso Simone and Simoncello (www.parcosimone.it), with the famous remains of the "city of the sun" commissioned by the Medici during the sixteenth century.
The State Natural Reserve "Gola del Furlo" (www.riservagoladelfurlo.it) with its imposing rocky walls on which the golden eagle circles.
Monte Nerone, stratified limestone massif, of marine origin dating back to the Jurassic period, with a significant variety of landscapes that together with Monte Catria, with its size of 1701 m asl, has been considered sacred since the ancient Umbrians and then by the Romans, they offer breathtaking views from the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea (www.pesarotrekking.it).
To the east of the Alpe della Luna we find Mount Fumaiolo, with the Tiber springs and which, until 1923, together with the Casentinesi Forests, today mostly in Romagna, were part of the Tuscany Region (www.parcoforestecasentinesi.it) .
The Italian Alpine Club combines all these peaks with the Sentiero Italia from which other secondary paths branch off. There are also many routes to be covered by mountain bike or horse.
Those who prefer motorcycles or cars can take advantage of alternative routes to the main routes. You are spoiled for choice.
