Abbey of San Salvatore di Monte Corona

Abbey of San Salvatore di Monte Corona

The abbey of San Salvatore di Montecorona is located four kilometers from Umbertide, at the foot of the homonymous hill.

According to tradition, it was San Romualdo who founded the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Acuto in the eleventh century. The ancient basement crypt is of considerable artistic and cultural value. It is composed of a large room divided into five naves, with columns of various styles that support the low vaults. The upper church, with three naves, of which the central one is covered with pavilion and with interesting remains of frescoes, was consecrated in 1105; it preserves a wooden chorus of good workmanship, while in place of the original altar, now disappeared, an ancient ciborium (perhaps from the 8th century) has been placed. Interesting is the octagonal and circular bell tower, perhaps formerly a defense tower, with the clock restored a few years ago.
