Village of Uffogliano

It seems that the territory was inhabited since the Bronze Age as evidenced by the remains of a village and a necropolis identified some decades ago. In the Middle Ages the ancient "Castrum Uffugliani" stood on top of the cliff called "castellaccio" and was very powerful, as reported in the catalog of Cardinal Anglico of 1371. In 1458 Sigismondo Malatesta, after a terrible assault, took the castle from the church feretrana and destroyed it, leaving only the remains of a cylindrical keep set on a quadrangular base. In Uffogliano there is an important church-canonical complex, recently restored and which is a well-preserved example of a rural parish. The church, already dedicated to Santa Maria and later to San Carlo Borromeo, has preserved the original furnishings, including the high altar, with very beautiful anchors and frames; of particular value is the Via Crucis engraved and watercolored, various paintings of the 16th-17th century. and a small choir with organ. The village of Ponte Santa Maria Maddalena is part of the village of Uffogliano, which rises in the valley, along the banks of the Marecchia and where most of the population lives. The place's toponym refers to an ancient chapel, dating back to 1574, dedicated to the cult of Santa Maria Maddalena and destroyed over the centuries.
