Abbey of Sant'Ellero
The Abbey of Sant'Ellero was founded, presumably between the end of the fifth and the beginning of the sixth century by Ellero who, as the Life of the Saint narrates, retired to the ascetic life in the upper valley of the Bidente. Because of the abandonment and periodic seismic shocks, the building that today appears to us is the overlapping of various construction phases and numerous restorations. The interior has a single nave and ends with a raised presbytery and a straight apse. The most fascinating part of the building is certainly the crypt, which preserves the sarcophagus of the saint, and in which there is a complex religious rite linked to the magic of stone.
