Piero della Francesca Civic Museum
The Piero della Francesca Civic Museum is located in the ancient Palazzo della Residenza, in the heart of the town. The museum is a historical art gallery, whose layout revolves around one of the main works of Piero della Francesca: the Resurrection, a work created around 1460 commissioned by the city in the most important place in the Community, the Sala dei Priori. The Resurrection has today become an emblem and symbol of the city. The other works of the artist present in the rooms of the museum are:
- the Polyptych of Mercy, commissioned by the local Confraternity for the altar of their church in 1442 and built between 1444 and 1464;
- the San Giuliano, a fragment of detached fresco, from the former church of Sant'Agostino;
- the San Ludovico, a fragment of a detached fresco, coming from the ancient Palazzo Pretorio.
The museum also collects pieces of other important authors, which testify to the cultural vitality of the city, including: Matteo di Giovanni, Iacopo Carucci called Pontormo, Andrea della Robbia, Domenico Cresti known as Passignano and Raffaellino del Colle.
