Church of the Cross

In the historic center of the Tuscan country is the place where tradition says that St. Francis, returning to Assisi from La Verna, planted a wooden cross on the ground. Between 1499 and 1534 the church was built with the adjoining convent. Inside there are paintings of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the 'Immaculate Conception of Passignano and the Invention of the Cross by Francesco Curradi. The coat of arms in the portal is that of the Fraternity of S. Maria del Borghetto, an ancient Confraternity of Mercy, whose headquarters were in the current Piazza Mameli. It is a significant church for the community because it contains the remains of the seventeenth-century chronicler Lorenzo Taglieschi.
