Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta

The church of Santa Maria Assunta, also called Pieve di S. Maria, rises in Badia and is what remains of the ancient monastery of Santa Maria in "Vallis Fabrica", one of the most ancient and important coenobi of Umbria founded by Benedictines in the Carolingian period. The oldest mention of the monastery, a Benedictine priory located on the left bank of Chiascio in the vicinity of the ancient castrum Vallis Fabrice, dates back to 1101, the news that it already exists in 820 is false, because it is false, when Ludovico il Pio he would give the cenobio privileges and donations. Very little remains of the original monastery. Many structures have been adapted to private homes and the porch has been demolished. The church, now in good condition thanks to the restoration of 1949, has a rectangular shape with an apse originally semicircular and a raised presbytery. Since 1960 the church is officiated only on certain holidays. Inside the roof is trussed and has a single nave. Inside there is a valuable fresco depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, stylistically close to Cimabue. Near the apse, inside a trilobed niche, supported by two medieval columns, there is a Majesty between Saints and Angels, an anonymous Umbrian work dating back to the early 14th century. The external building is near the cemetery of Valfabbrica and the adjacent buildings have been adapted to civilian homes.
