The Madonna of Citerna di Donatello
Polychrome terracotta, after a long restoration lasted almost seven years at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, since December 2012 has returned to show off at the sacristy of the Church of San Francesco di Citerna.
The work dated around 1415/20 is considered one of the most fascinating and daring discoveries in the field of art in recent years, a discovery by Dr. Laura Ciferri who revealed to the public a masterpiece of undoubted artistic-cultural value . The original pictorial surface, hidden until the pre-restoration by different repainting performed over time in different eras, has come to light in all its beauty for the quality of the colors, very rich and precious and for the refinement of the decoration, revealing full aspects typical of a representation linked to the taste of the International Gothic, still in existence in the early fifteenth century in Florence.
