Tredozio

Fun and games. Taste and tradition. Thousands of coloured eggs and techniques handed down with the ancient rituals of Easter. Tredozio is situated in a flat area along the Tramazzo valley, in an area on the border between Romagna and Tuscany. The village of remote origins, like the other the towns in the Apennines, uses habits and customs from both regions.

Formerly known as Castrum Treudacium, there are traces from Bronze Age settlements found in Santa Maria in Castello, memories of the passage of the Gauls, the Romans and the Byzantines.

The Count Guidi di Modigliana (XII century) built a fortress enclosed between stone walls, the so-called Castellaccio, it became the possession of the Florentine Republic in 1428, following an act of submission by the local community. There are only a few underground enclosures in the fort, probably used as wine cellars or for water storage, the are also the remains of the seventeen-meter-high tower and some other ruins.

There are numerous palaces that overlook the historic centre clike the opulent Palazzo Fantini, the grand estate with an Italian garden, was home to the noble family that owned thirty thousand hectares of land. Built before the 1500's, Palazzo Fantini was restored in 1750 by  wish of Lorenzo Maria Fantini and today houses the Museum of Peasant Civilization on the ground floor, with the tools of the past exhibited in carefully restored environments.

The most ancient buildings are the church of San Michele (XII century) that preserves the crucifix painted by the Rimini school (14th century) and the sixteenth century church of the Society of the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin of Graces with the “Annunciazione" by Lorenzo Monaco and the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Silvestro Lega.

Tredozio’s economy today is based on footwear entrepreneurs and artisans: renowned for making riding boots, produced in these areas and worn by horsemen and women from all over the world and even several Olympic teams.

The scenic panoramic trails immersed in the uncontaminated nature of the Foreste Casentinese National Park, Monte Falterona and Campigna, the silent beech woods of Fonte del Bepi and the charm of Lake Ponte, at Scarzana, make it the perfect place for healthy air.

Its cultural liveliness expresses itself during Easter, when the territory is populated by curious people who participate in traditional egg-related events: from the ancient challenge of boiled egg eating, the national championship of boiled egg eaters and that culminates in a Palio (race), characterised by the parade of medieval wagons accompanied by flag throwers and musicians.

In November, there is the festival of “bartolaccio” which offers live music and shows of all kinds, dedicated to the tasty “tortello" cooked on a skillet and then stuffed with boiled potatoes, pork bacon and pecorino cheese.
