The Palio del Conte

The Palio del Conte

Located at the foot of the Catria massif, and watched over by its castle, Frontone represents a strategic place, a point of passage, of exchange. In 1530 under the Della Porta family, Frontone became a county and remained so until the early 1800s, following the descent of Napoleon in Italy. Born from the desire to rediscover its traditions, the Palio del Conte puts the inhabitants of Frontone in competition, always in a goliardic manner. Divided into 4 Contradas bearing the names of Saints Teodoro (patron of the Municipality), Antonio, Barbara and Madonna del Buonconsiglio, they challenge in competitions of skill and dexterity to win the Palio, the Castle Key. The party opens with a costume parade; the Conte della Porta returns to Frontone for the summer, taking over the direct management of the county. Welcomed by the people of Frontone, and accompanied by archers, men in arms, nobles, flag-wavers, musicians and so on, the Count reopens the majestic door of his Castle. In his honor and for his beloved, the four Contradas, will be so battle in challenges of various kinds and with participants of all ages, but always with a reference to the roots of the local culture, for a continuous rediscovery and enhancement of the territory. To welcome guests the Taverna delle Contrade with local specialties, entertainment, music and medieval market, for two days absolutely not to be missed. In the third weekend of July.
