Monumental Complex of the Medieval Tower and Roman Bridge
The local tradition considers the bridge that crosses the Metauro to Fermignano from the Roman era. It is a monumental structure with three arches, built in stone blocks arranged in low rows and with brick restoration sections. The construction technique is similar to that with which the adjacent tower was built, which stands in defense of the significant place of transit. In fact, it probably played the role of control of the important ford on the Metauro, a toll station, as well as a city defense. The Tower seems to be a typical medieval factory, perhaps resting on supposedly Roman foundations. Ponte and Torre are closely connected and seem to constitute a single monumental complex, of fundamental strategic importance in the context of the medieval road network. At the foot of the tower is the public fountain called "Mascherone" built in 1886. In the middle of the bridge is a shrine to be erected, it seems, on the occasion of an intervention carried out on the bridge in the second half of the 400 by Federico Montefeltro and under the direction of Francesco di Giorgio. Inside you can admire a Madonna and Child of late fifteenth-century workmanship.
