Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo

Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo

The history of this Abbey is inextricably linked to the history of the Massa Trabaria, an autonomous province of the state of the Church with little more than two centuries of life.
There are no historical documents, but it is dated back to the 10th century: the architectural style, as well as the documentary evidence (dated 1218), lead inexorably to this hypothesis.
We have preserved few documents, and the still existing statutes, we understand how the Nullius of San Michele Arcangelo was important at the time, a central role, due both to the border position and the vastness of territory and castles underneath the possession.
Among the works of art here, we can mention some original frescoes of the fifteenth century, or paintings by Raffaellino del Colle, as well as paintings by the school of F. Mancini, or the Dead Christ, sculpted by Anton Maria Maragliano, without forgetting the Crucifix Ligneo, XVI century
Last curiosity: inside there are twelve columns, surmounted by as many windows, since they served as a clock, which with the light of the sun indicated the hour to the faithful.
Appreciable for its internal works, this late-Romanesque work with eight arches and three naves is to be attended during mass, to live it much more than an anonymous visit.
